SkyTel Announces Availability of Wireless Messaging for Sony Magic Link Personal Communicators
NEW YORK — September 28, 1994 — SkyTel Corp. today announced the availability of wireless messaging services for the Sony Magic Link personal intelligent communicator (PIC).
Wireless services are being provided as a result of an agreement between SkyTel and Sony Electronics Inc. Using Sony's Magic Link Pager Card — a wireless communications card — and the SkyTel network, customers can receive text messages, electronic mail, fax and voice mail notification, news and information updates wirelessly across the United States.
''SkyTel's history of pioneering new products and services in the wireless messaging industry is being continued today,'' said Doug Brackbill, senior vice president, wireless services, SkyTel Corp. ''We are very proud to be working with Sony, AT&T and General Magic to bring such an innovative product to market. Wireless messaging, which will give Magic Link PIC users increased mobility and flexibility, is a natural and powerful addition to the product features.''
The Magic Link product helps users manage all the information received wirelessly, via the Pager Card, in an intuitive manner. For example, incoming information can be saved and filed; users can cut and paste the information into documents they are working on; or drop address information straight into a new name card. If the message contains a phone number, a Magic Link unit will immediately cross-check that number against existing name cards and display the corresponding name if it finds a match.
SkyTel services are tightly integrated with AT&T's PersonalLink Services, available to all users of Magic Link personal communicators. Magic Link users can add wireless messaging capabilities to their PersonalLink Services mail system by having mail messages forwarded to their Pager Card. Using easy-to-implement mailbox rules, users can choose which messages should be forwarded and can receive wireless notification as soon as a message arrives in their mailbox. These wireless messages can be as brief as sender name and subject or can be postcard-length messages.
SkyTel services are designed to make it easy for users on the move to receive messages and information automatically. The SkyTel System enables transmission of a variety of message types. Short text messages can be sent to all subscribers directly from a computer using a modem or via an operator using an 800 number. SkyTel, in addition, provides connections to many public and private e-mail systems, enabling customers to receive wireless messages from colleagues on their mail network.
Subscribers will also be able to tap into a host of SkyTel services designed with the mobile professional in mind. They can subscribe to SkyQuote, SkyTel's stock-tracking service, or SkyFax, a system based on a store-and-forward faxing service that notifies users when they receive faxes and enables them to route the fax to the machine most convenient for them. All of these services give subscribers immediate access to time-critical information from their office or to personal messages — both of which help make life and work easier to manage.
SkyTel offers users a choice of coverage options to accommodate different professional and personal needs. SkyTel coverage extends to over 90% of the United States and the system is designed to have excellent reach, even when a user is indoors. Subscribers can choose between metro, regional and nationwide service. Subscribers to metro service, which covers major metropolitan areas, can also take advantage of SkyTel's Nationwide Now service, allowing them to expand coverage on a temporary basis when traveling nationwide.
