Smartcode Software Licenses Unwired Planet Technology to Develop WAP-Compatible Microbrowsers

SAN DIEGO — August 25, 1998 — Smartcode Software Inc. today announced that it has entered a licensing agreement with Unwired Planet Inc. (UP) of Redwood City, Calif., to develop WAP-compatible microbrowsers for handheld devices.

Under the terms of the agreement, Smartcode Software will employ Unwired Planet(TM) microbrowser technology to develop, market and support WAP-compatible microbrowsers for PalmOS(TM) and Windows CE platforms. Communication on wireless networks is more rapid and efficient using UP's efficient protocols and application platform, resulting in a lower cost solution for mobile professionals.

"By combining UP's technology with our own, we are able to provide a complete and optimized WAP solution that OEM manufacturers can quickly integrate into their own devices," says Alain Molinie, chief executive officer of Smartcode Software Inc. "Our experience with PalmOS, Windows CE and Smartphones, will help expand the use of WAP-based technology into new areas."

The strategic relationship between Smartcode and UP will extend the UP.Link(TM) Platform beyond mobile phones, providing wireless network operators and business customers with more options for wireless connectivity. UP technology and WAP establish an optimized, standards-based solution for adding wireless connectivity to handheld devices, by addressing the constraints of limited screen size, constrained bandwidth, and latency.

"There's a natural fit between UP's core microbrowser technology and Smartcode's product strategy for Palm Computing and WinCE operating systems," said Jeff Damir, vice president of business development for Unwired Planet.

"With Smartcode leveraging UP's proven platform and the WAP specification, handheld device manufacturers can now enable devices with a reliable wireless connectivity solution by simply licensing an UP-compatible microbrowser directly from Smartcode — no porting work is required."

Smartcode Software WAP microbrowsers will offer compatibility with UP's UP.Link Server Suite. Smartcode plans to release the first product in Q4 1998. For more [email protected].
