Telxon and ARDIS Announce Innovative Wireless Testing Program
ANAHEIM, Calif. — October 6, 1992 — Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ: TLXN), the world leader in wireless hand-held computer systems, and ARDIS, a joint venture of IBM and Motorola, today announced a unique plan that allows field service organizations to test the power of hand-held microcomputers and wide area wireless data networks. The announcement was made at Scan-Tech, the world's largest automatic ID showcase.
The companies introduced a "Starter Kit" that provides all of the elements necessary to preview the features and benefits of a self- contained dispatch and call management system.
For a nominal fee, customers can choose a package that includes either 25 or 50 hand-held microcomputers, a host PC computer, off-the- shelf field service application software and 90 days of unlimited usage on ARDIS, the first nationwide wireless wide area data communications network.
The purpose of the "Starter Kit" is to enable companies to quickly and easily validate the powerful benefits they could realize in a production rollout of the system. The "Starter Kit" also provides a graceful migration to a more robust set of application modules for that rollout.
At the end of the "test period," customers can return the equipment and determine whether or not to install a system custom-tailored to its business.
The program will permit wireless interactive communications between headquarters or the service depot and field technicians anywhere in the customer's market area. It offers a wide range of functions, including dispatch, parts inventory, call closing and peer-to-peer messaging.
Advances in wireless data communications are fueling the explosive growth of hand-held microcomputer technology in the field service arena.
With ARDIS, technicians can access their corporate information systems or communicate instantaneously with their peers from virtually any location.
