Three New Hitachi Handheld PCs Available April 30 — Units Feature a Larger Screen and Lighter Weight

NORCROSS, Ga. — April 28, 1997 — Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc., a subsidiary of Hitachi America, Ltd., today announced April 30th availability of its new Windows(R)CE-based Handheld PC in the U.S. The company will begin marketing three models of the Hitachi HPW-10E nationwide at Staples and Fry's. The Hitachi units are priced (suggested retail price) at $ 499.95 for the 2-megabyte (MB) version (HPW-10E2), $ 599.95 for the 4MB version (HPW-10E4), and $ 699.95 for the 4MB version with built-in 28.8 kbps modem (HPW-10E4MB).

Hitachi will also market its Handheld PC in Canada through Hitachi (HSC) Canada, Inc.. Prices in Canada will be $ 749 for the HPW-10E2, $ 899 for the HPW-10E4 and $ 999 for the HPW-10E4MB.

The Windows(R)CE platform is an open, scalable Windows(R)95 operating system platform for consumer electronics and non-PC devices. The Hitachi Handheld PC employs the company's 32-bit SuperH(TM) RISC architecture-based SH-3 microprocessor, which is a key engine for the Microsoft platform. The Hitachi Handheld PC features a larger screen, lighter weight and a compact and easy-to-type keyboard, with easy operation and functionality employing popular Windows(R)95-based applications software.

Hitachi is also bundling additional free software including Freehand Notepad, cc:Mail, MS(R)Mail, and FAX.
