VIZITEL Unveils Beta Test Version of First Interactive Communications Software for H/PC’s
United Kingdom — November 13, 1997 — VIZITEL unveils the beta test version of ScreenShare for Windows CE, the first interactive communications software for hand-held portable computers (H/PC's), on the Sharp stand at COMDEX.
ScreenShare-CE enables interactive white boarding, shared application viewing and the transfer of live and still images from one PC, laptop or H/PC screen to another. ScreenShare has been specifically designed for interactive visual conferencing over narrow bandwidth connections such as digital cellular or standard telephone lines (POTS). ScreenShare-CE is an extremely powerful tool which will allow companies to provide high quality communications to field technicians, sales and support personnel in an effective and relatively inexpensive manner.
"The unique narrow bandwidth performance of ScreenShare-CE means that it is the only product able to provide total interactive communications between a desktop PC and a Windows CE palm top," said Jerome Rush, VIZITEL's designer and managing director. "The relatively low cost of an H/PC together with ScreenShare-CE enables us to offer a high quality, effective communications tool addressing the needs of mobile workers, field technicians, sales and support personnel."
Demonstrations on the stand will show how ScreenShare-CE links two Sharp Mobilon HC-4500 H/PC's via the GSM network, creating a bi-directional flow of data and images. ScreenShare's image and full conferencing capabilities will be displayed using the Mobilon's PC card digital camera. The camera, attached to a PCMCIA card, simply slots into the H/PC and can be rotated to capture selected images.
ScreenShare sends the image of the data and not the data itself so all communications takes place in a totally secure manner. The receiver sees only what the sender wants to show and while both users can interactively annotate the screen, the underlying data or image is not affected. Applications for ScreenShare-CE include interactive teleworking, field support, distance learning, technical support, project co-ordination and on-site trouble-shooting. ScreenShare is appropriate for any company that uses graphical information, or that wishes to hold 'virtual meetings' at a fraction of the cost of traditional video conferencing systems.
Visual Technologies Ltd was formed specifically to develop real time interactive voice and image communications products for narrow bandwidth connections. VIZITEL Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Visual Technologies Ltd.
Notes:
Microsoft's Windows CE, a cut down version of the NT4 operating system, enables H/PC's to run CE versions of desktop applications and simplifies the synchronisation of data between the two. A Cellnet preferred supplier, VIZITEL's ScreenShare is capable of sending live video images over the digital cellular network. Video is captured from any Video-for-Windows compatible image capture board
