Web ’97 Chosen as Primary Locale for Range of Windows CE Tools and Java-Based Announcements

SAN FRANCISCO — September 22, 1997 — Miller Freeman's Web Design and Development (Web '97) conference will serve as the premier venue for multiple industry announcements and product introductions related to Windows CE and Java technologies. Announcements and demonstrations from Microsoft, Symantec, and Borland, to Intrinsyc and ObjectSpace will be made as the exhibition component of Web '97 kicks off at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, October 1 through Friday, October 3.

Web '97 is the only conference that targets professionals involved in every facet of the Web site building process. Expected to draw over 15,000 attendees, Web '97 is aimed specifically at programmers, designers, Web masters, content providers, marketers, and system administrators. It is also the industry's first Web-focused conference offering more than 170 comprehensive sessions geared toward providing Web teams with practical advice and solutions to site development challenges and technologies.

Affecting the Windows CE hand-held PC community, Microsoft Corporation is expected to introduce three new Windows CE Toolkits that will include remote debugging and desktop emulation:

* Visual C++ 5.0: enables development against customized Windows CE/OS configurations.

* Visual Basic 5.0: allows Visual Basic developers to create applications and solutions for Windows CE-based devices.

* Visual J++ 1.1: allows easier Java application development and debugging.

Riding the success of Microsoft's new Windows CE operating system, Intrinsyc Software plans to debut Rainbow, the first Web server for Windows CE. Rainbow's efficient, compact server software will allow Windows CE-based embedded computers to be accessible directly on the Internet using popular Web browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's Navigator.

River Run Software will introduce into the CE market an enhanced version of Run!O, providing Windows CE users with improved e-mail access to Microsoft Mail, Lotus cc:Mail, Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes Mail, over wireline and wireless networks.

In the Java arena, NetDynamics is planning to announce its Java-based Enterprise Internet Application Platform. NetDynamics' new platform is a comprehensive Java solution for the delivery and management of networked business systems, integrated database systems, mainframes and enterprise client/server applications such as PeopleSoft or SAP.

"It's exciting to see a growing range of companies, from industry leaders to innovative start-ups choose Web '97 to introduce their new products," said Eric Faurot, director of Web '97. "Their choice validates how Web '97 fits the need for an increasing number of companies looking to reach a highly focused group of professionals involved in building Web sites."

Other new products being demonstrated at Web '97 include the following:

* Borland will introduce Visual dBase 7 Professional, which combines Borland's visual development tools, Visual dBase Compiler, interactive data management tools, and a reusable component model, to deliver high-performance, 32-bit database applications. New features will include a programmable grid control, integrated native reporting objects, Live Two-Way-Tools, Visual Designers, and a debugger.

* Symantec will be demonstrating three upgrades to Visual Cafe 2.0, their Java development tool for Windows and Macintosh. These new upgrades will include the Database Development Edition, Professional Development Edition, and the Web Development Edition.

* Allaire will debut two new releases of its products:

— Cold Fusion 3.0, a rapid application development tool for the Web. Cold Fusion 3.0 lets developers create scaleable solutions for electronic commerce, collaborative computing, and business systems. This version also features an integrated development environment and compatibility with Unix.

— Homesite 3.0 provides the professional Web developer with the simplicity, integration and elegance required to rapidly build and manage Web sites and Web applications.

* preEmptive Solutions will unveil DashO, Java Code Optimizer, which boosts the performance of all Java programs regardless of their function or execution platform. DashO works on code after it has been developed and debugged. The class files produced by DashO are still 100% Java so they are still 100% platform-independent. DashO will optimize the class files built by any Java compiler, making them smaller and faster. As a result, all runtimes will see better performance.

* Bristol Technology will announce Jprinter, a WYSIWYG PostScript and PCL network printing system for Java. Jprinter will let JavaVM developers and OEMs enable sophisticated printing from any Java application. Jprinter will offer a standard, cross-platform printing solution for Network Computers, Windows-based PC's, Unix, OpenVMS workstations, and high-end S390 mainframes.

* ObjectSpace plans to announce ObjectSpace Voyager, an agent-enhanced, Java application platform which allows Java programmers to quickly create sophisticated network applications. Voyager will seamlessly support both traditional and agent-enhanced distributed computing techniques.

* Parasoft will introduce jtest!, an entirely automatic testing solution for Java applets. jtest! lets a developer supply bytecodes for an applet and then finds circumstances where user input will cause problems for the applet at runtime. jtest! then reports the offending inputs to the developer along with the exceptions they caused. The developer may then add code to handle the unexpected input.

* Imperial Software Technology will debut Visaj, the rapid JavaO application development tool written completely in Java. Visaj enhances developers' productivity by providing a point-and-click layout editor for rapidly building 100% pure Java applications. Visaj integrates with Java Beans-compliant components from all major suppliers and integrates with leading Java integrated development environments. Applications built with Visaj are also fully compliant with the Sun Microsystem's JDK.

* KL Group will debut five new products, three of which include:

— JClass Field 1.0 is a 100% Java Bean for Java and JavaScript developers, that provides data input and validation. jClass Field 1.0 includes support for locale specific date/time, validation, pick lists, spin boxes and combo boxes, currency for input, formatting and output, float integers, JavaScript, numeric and string

— JClass LiveTable 3.0 is a 100% Java data-bound grid/table that enables developers to easily display and manipulate tables and forms. It supports text, images, and lightweight components in cells.

— JClass Chart 2.0 is a 100% Java component that enables developers to embed sophisticated graphs and charts into applications and applets.

* Dart Communications will introduce two new products:

— PowerTCP Web Toolkit for VB 5.0, allows developers to publish Web page applications that use multiple Internet protocols directly from browsers supporting VB Script and ActiveX documents.

— PowerTCP Internet Toolkit for Java, written in 100% Java code, allows Dart's FTP and Telnet classes to add Internet protocols to any Java application or applet.

New Java-based charting and graphics applications will also be introduced including:

* NetFactory plans to introduce ChartBlaster, a solution that quickly generates high-quality graphics for business and engineering applications. By combining ChartBlaster with the NetCharts graphic engine, users can create, edit, and publish high-quality, Java-powered graphs on the Web or on other applications without requiring any HTML or Java skills.

* Three/D/Graphics will debut Perspective JavaChart, a 100% native Java Bean and class library for creating accurate charts in a Java environment. Perspective JavaChart will support gradient/texture effects and a full complement of user-interface elements.
