WordPerfect Corp. Releases WordPerfect InForms 1.0; Initial Sales Exceed $1.5 Million
OREM, Utah — July 30, 1993 — WordPerfect Corp. Friday announced that WordPerfect InForms 1.0 is in widespread distribution and has exceeded $1.5 million in initial sales.
The new electronic forms and database-access package began shipping July 20. WordPerfect InForms (WP InForms) allows users to easily create and fill in forms electronically, and to secure forms with digital signature technology.
"With WordPerfect InForms, virtually anyone can design and fill in a form," said Royce Bybee, director of WordPerfect InForms Marketing at WordPerfect Corp. "Professional forms can be created without using a programming language, and can be distributed with WordPerfect Office 4.0 and other popular e-mail systems."
WP InForms is two applications in one: the Designer provides the functionality for creating and maintaining forms, and the Filler allows forms to be filled in and distributed. The Filler also directly reads and writes to 16 databases, and can be used to query those databases for specific information. A security module provides digital signatures for each record created by WP InForms.
The WP InForms Designer provides all the tools needed to create a form. The Designer's basic functions include a floating tool palette that allows users to easily add entry fields, radio buttons, check boxes, bar codes, action buttons, tables or graphics to electronic forms.
To speed up form design, adjustable snap-to-grids and alignment guides help the user accurately place and align items. Electronic forms can also include drop-down list boxes, text boxes and can be up to 99 pages in length. The Designer ships with 100 ready-to-use sample forms that can also be modified by the user.
With the WP InForms Filler, users can fill in forms created with the Designer, receive instructions from prompts and validate responses for accuracy. Powerful spreadsheet calculations that are defined in the Designer provide financial, statistical or arithmetic values that enter data automatically when administered in the Filler.
Some of the 120 built-in calculations can be used to convert dates to a specified format, reveal hidden fields, add a record to a database, or prompt a user to explain an entry. Calculations can be used alone, within other calculations, or as part of a larger formula.
After the form is completed, it can be transported using electronic mail, returned to a specified location on the network, or printed. The WP InForms Filler is initially available for Windows, followed by versions for DOS, Macintosh, OS/2, UNIX and PenPoint operating systems.
WP InForms supports more desktop databases than any other electronic forms package, including the following desktop database formats: ASCII Delimited, Btrieve, Clipper, DataPerfect, dBase, FoxPro, Paradox and WordPerfect Secondary Merge File. WP InForms is the only forms package that supports SQL databases such as DB2, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, NetWare SQL, Oracle, SQLBase, Sybase SQL Server and XDB.
All databases are supported in native mode; information can be read and/or written directly to databases without importing or exporting data. The same graphical query interface to the databases supported by WP InForms allows joins to be easily defined between databases of different types; the user can express a query to any combination of SQL and desktop databases.
Once retrieved, results of a query can be printed, e-mailed or saved into any one of the supported databases and used again.
WP InForms provides digital signatures and security at the form-data level and at the security database level. WP InForms uses the RSA Public Key Cryptosystem technology from RSA Data Securities Inc.
Using the WordPerfect TamperSeal, tamper detection is available on every record created in a form that has a signature file. The security database is also secured by a digital signature set by the security database administrator.
WP InForms interacts directly with WordPerfect Office (versions 3.1 and 4.0), Lotus cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail, Windows for Workgroups Mail and other MAPI-based mail systems. Users can also attach forms to any mail system that allows binary file attachments.
With WordPerfect Office 4.0, users can route forms and enter the completed form's contents into a designated database. Using any of the supported mail systems, the Filler can be automatically launched from incoming mail when a form is enclosed in the mail message.
Until Sept. 30, 1993, WordPerfect Corp. will offer a free Filler license to customers who purchase retail, upgrade or competitive trade-up packages of the Client Pack and the Additional Mailbox License Pack of WordPerfect Office 4.0.
