WyndMail Provides Wireless E-mail for Windows CE Allowing Mobile Users to Stay Connected
LAS VEGAS — November 18, 1996 — Nationwide Wireless E-mail, Faxing, Paging And Internet Information from $ 29.95 per Month; COMDEX/Fall 1996 Wynd Communications on Monday announced WyndMail wireless e-mail for Windows CE, Microsoft Corp.'s new operating system for handheld PC devices.
WyndMail provides an all-inclusive wireless mobile communications solution, with the required software, service and mobile network, for just $ 29.95 per month.
"Together, Windows CE and WyndMail turn the handheld computer into the perfect e-mail machine," said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies in San Jose. "The one-two punch of Windows CE and WyndMail empower mobile users to stay connected via e-mail, fax, voice-to-text/text-to-voice and the Internet no matter where their travels take them."
Selected by Microsoft as a primary application for Windows CE, WyndMail uses the platform's built-in e-mail application which makes sending and receiving e-mail, faxes and voice-to-text/text-to-voice messages very simple.
"WyndMail running with Windows CE literally requires no learning curve. It's completely intuitive," Bajarin added.
Its seamless integration extends to the applications built in to Windows CE, including Microsoft Excel and Word, giving users the ability to send/receive file attachments automatically.
WyndMail Users Get Messages Instantly, Without Dialing or Waiting
WyndMail enables users of handheld devices running Windows CE to stay connected regardless of where they travel. WyndMail delivers messages to the user without dialing in, without waiting and without initializing. Users can even send/receive messages during meetings without interruption and can forward WyndMail messages to any Internet address.
"WyndMail puts a suite of high-powered communications tools into the hands of Windows CE users," said Robert Kimball, chief technology officer for Wynd. "These tools go wherever the handheld PC goes, providing instant, discreet communications in meetings, on the go, or on the road."
"The announcement of WyndMail for Windows CE is applauded by Microsoft," said Jon Magill, director of marketing, consumer appliances group at Microsoft. "With broad industry support from companies such as Wynd Communications, the Windows CE platform will allow handheld computing to expand to its full. We are excited that Wynd Communications has delivered on its commitment to providing support for the handheld PC platform with its wireless e-mail solution."
Because WyndMail is independent of phone lines, messages go wherever the handheld computer goes. Users don't need a phone line to access and respond to their messages. The wireless modem and software are contained within the handheld computer providing a completely wire-free and portable solution.
It operates using the RAM Mobile Data Network, which currently provides coverage in 92 percent of the metropolitan United States and is still expanding.
Because WyndMail works with a wireless modem, there are no long distance charges, access fees, or hefty surcharges on calls made from hotel rooms. While most WyndMail messages cost 30 cents or less, short messages cost just a dime, making it an affordable alternative to wired communications.
The Wynd service bureau provides filtering and forwarding of messages, giving users the ability to personalize the e-mail functions to suit their own personal work styles, such as the choice of which messages are received wirelessly.
Wynd has teamed with NetTech Systems Inc., a leading developer of wireless communications middleware, to develop its solution for Windows CE.
"We're excited to be working with Wynd Communications to develop our InstantRF mobile connectivity tools for Windows CE," said Boris Fridman, president of NetTech Systems.
NetTech is a leading developer of wireless communication middleware, with a proven track record for reliable, efficient management of wireless networks across a range of operating environments. "Working with NetTech assures our customers that they will receive the best possible wireless communications solution for Windows CE," added Kimball.
