History

On January 29, 1996, in conjunction with the Palm Computing division of U.S. Robotics' announcement of the Pilot connected organizer at Demo '96 in Palm Springs, California, Metrowerks announced that CodeWarrior would support application development for the Palm Operating System (Palm OS).1 Metrowerks had been founded in 1985, and at the time of the announcement CodeWarrior was described as a Macintosh-hosted, 32-bit development tool supporting C, C++, and Object Pascal programming languages, with cross-targets that included the Mac OS, Windows 95, Windows NT, Magic Cap, and Be OS — and now also the Palm OS.1 Development for Pilot was specified to use a Macintosh computer, a software developer's kit from U.S. Robotics scheduled for May 1996, and Metrowerks' CodeWarrior tools.1

On June 11, 1996, Palm Computing, Inc. — by then a subsidiary of U.S. Robotics — and Metrowerks announced CodeWarrior for Pilot DR1, a Macintosh-hosted toolkit that enabled developers proficient in C to write applications for the Palm OS.2 DR1 was supported on both 68K and Power Macintosh computers, with support for the Windows operating system planned for the fourth quarter of 1996.2 The release was priced at US$299, was available from mid-June, and followed the Metrowerks three-times-a-year release schedule; buyers of DR1 received upgrades through CodeWarrior for Pilot 5.2 At the time of the ship announcement, Palm Computing reported that more than 1,500 developers had registered for the Pilot development program since the device's January introduction.2

On April 28, 1997, Metrowerks announced CodeWarrior for PalmPilot DR/2, the first release of the Pilot tools hosted on Windows 95/NT in addition to Mac OS.3 DR/2 added direct-to-device debugging support for Palm OS 1.0 from both host platforms, introduced a new visual interface design editor called Constructor for Palm OS — which allowed developers to interactively create graphical user interfaces by selecting objects such as windows and menu bars from a palette and placing them in the final application — and was priced at US$369.3 When U.S. Robotics released the Palm OS 2.0 system headers and libraries, they would be shipped to all CodeWarrior for PalmPilot registered users free of charge.3
