History
Metrowerks CodeWarrior support for the Palm OS dates to January 29, 1996, when Metrowerks announced at Demo '96 that its CodeWarrior tools would support application development for the Palm OS that powered the Pilot connected organizer, with development done on a Macintosh using a U.S. Robotics software developer's kit and CodeWarrior.1 On June 11, 1996, U.S. Robotics' Palm Computing and Metrowerks released CodeWarrior for Pilot DR1, a Macintosh-hosted toolkit for both 68K and Power Macintosh computers that let C programmers build Palm OS applications, priced at $299 and following Metrowerks' traditional three-times-a-year release schedule.2
On April 28, 1997, Metrowerks introduced CodeWarrior for PalmPilot DR/2, the first release of its PalmPilot tools hosted on Windows 95/NT in addition to Mac OS, targeting the PalmPilot Professional and PalmPilot Personal organizers from U.S. Robotics.3 That release added Constructor for Palm OS, a visual interface design editor for laying out graphical user interfaces, along with direct-to-device debugging for Palm OS 1.0, and carried a suggested retail price of US$369.3
Metrowerks began shipping CodeWarrior for PalmPilot Release 3 in early August 1997 as an integrated suite of tools for both Mac OS and Windows 95/NT.4 Release 3 included the final update to the PalmPilot SDK Version 2, which supported the enhancements in Palm OS 2.0 including TCP/IP networking and new user interface controls, with complete and separate SDKs for Mac OS and Windows.4 The updated Constructor for PalmPilot added support for string lists, and the debugger offered remote source-level debugging for Palm OS applications and source-level debugging of simulated PalmPilot applications on the Mac.4 The product was priced at US$369, with academic pricing of US$119, and all purchases included one free product update.4
The boxed Release 3 product was branded for the U.S. Robotics PalmPilot Connected Organizer and packaged a C compiler, the CodeWarrior IDE, GUI layout tools, a source-level debugger, the Palm OS Conduit SDK for Windows, Palm OS 2.0 libraries, online help, online documentation, and TCP/IP support.5 The package listed minimum requirements of a Macintosh running System 7.1 or later on a 68020 or PowerPC 601 processor, or a PC running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, each with 24 MB of RAM, 90 MB of free hard disk space, and a CD-ROM drive, while the Palm OS Conduit SDK for Windows additionally required Microsoft Visual C++ 4.1 and MFC 4.1.5 It was sold with one free product update, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and free technical support.5
Metrowerks succeeded the product on February 3, 1998, when it began shipping Release 4 of CodeWarrior for Palm OS, adding C++ support and extending coverage to the 3Com PalmPilot Organizer, the IBM WorkPad PC Companion, and the Franklin Day Planner, again priced at US$369 with US$119 academic pricing.6
