Apple Computer, Inc.

In an attempt to make the Newton an out-of-box solution, Apple is bundling Tapworks with each new Newton sold. Tapworks, developed by Sunnyvale-based Avail Technologies, is an integrated application offering spreadsheet, text processing, graphs and drawing tools.

Paging Network Inc.

As part of the rush to accumulate nationwide frequencies, Paging Network (PageNet) has announced that it will buy the paging assets and nationwide paging frequencies of ComTech, Inc.

PageNet is the largest operator of paging services in the United States, in addition to offering wireless data services to mobile computer users.

AirTouch Communications Inc.

In an era of communication mergers and takeovers, AirTouch Communications has teamed with NewVector to form the Wireless Management Co. NewVector is the cellular concern of the regional bell company US West, while AirTouch is the new name for PacTel Cellular, the wireless company of Pacific Telesis.

Together the two companies cover the important markets of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and others. The announcement comes following the proposed merger of McCaw Cellular with AT&T, and the teaming of Bell Atlantic with NYNEX, two northeastern regional Bell operating companies.

Megahertz Corporation

Preferring to service its European customers and distributors from its Salt Lake City, Utah office, Megahertz Corporation closed its European-headquartered operation.

The move, which came as a surprise to both customers and employees alike, will cause approximately ten jobs to be lost.

Vodafone

The U.K.-based company has introduced two new services using the Short Messaging Service (SMS) feature of the global system for mobile communications (GSM), a digital phone standard.

The services, known as Vodafone Respond and Telenote, enables a user to send a short message to a mobile user using either a touch-tone phone or a terminal and modem respectively.

MiniStor Peripherals Corp.

Founded in May 1991, the San Jose, California-based maker of storage devices announced that it had its initial public offering on the NASDAQ national market on July 29, 1994.

The trading will include common stock and warrants, under the symbols MINSF and MINWF respectively. The investment firms of Punk, Ziegel & Knoell, and D. Blech & Company Inc. served as the underwriters for the offering.

Claiming better data import and export support directly from most Windows applications, Apple released version 2.0 of the Newton Connection Kit for Windows.

The company claims the new version runs faster, and includes better support for the following applications: Lotus Organizer, 1-2-3 and AmiPro; Symantec’s Act!, Polaris Software’s Packrat and Advantage; Microsoft Excel, Work and Works, and others.
