Notwithstanding their obvious benefits, wireless networks have faced an uphill battle in the corporate and enterprise networking world. While touting ease and flexibility of installation, wireless continues to take hits when it comes to price and performance.
San Jose, California-based RadioLAN is working to change the dynamics of that equation with its recent introduction of RadioLAN/10 and 10BaseRadioLINK. RadioLAN/10 is a family of 10 Mbps access units that work with both wireless and 10BaseT LANs and is available in versions for parallel port, ISA Bus, and PCMCIA connections.
The company claims that RadioLAN/10, priced at $350 per node and operating at 10 Mbps, offers a competitive price/performance ratio when compared with an equivalent 10BaseT solution made up of an adapter card, hub port, and necessary cabling.
The access unit combines the adapter, radio transceiver, and base station features into one unit, and can be used between 150 to 400 feet (45 to 122 m) away or can be connected directly to a wireline 10BaseT network. The access unit can function in four modes at once, including as a wireless node, a 10BaseT node, a bridge or access point between 10BaseT and wireless networks, and as a relay node for roaming workers.
Meanwhile, the 10BaseRadioLINK serves as the wireless operating system which manages the communication between the RadioLAN/10 access units. The system operates at 5.8 GHz and is compliant with IEEE standards including 802.3, 802.11 PC Interface and SNMP.
