In order for wireless to fulfill its outstanding promise, users will have to locate and adopt applications that provide sufficient utility using the new medium. However, before that can happen, developers need to build them. And to do that, they need tools.

Racotek, a Minneapolis-based firm specializing in wireless computing software, has introduced KeyBuilder, an element that is one piece of this puzzle. KeyBuilder is a development toolkit that enables people to integrate existing or new applications with KeyWare, Racotek’s wireless networking software product. Using KeyWare, applications can have access to multiple wireless networks using standard notebook computers.

KeyBuilder, a Windows-based development environment, makes application development a bit easier by including the following features:

  • a GUI-based Code Generator, which enables developers to automatically generate KeyWare-compliant source code that can be placed inside an application program.
  • sample applications, which developers can use as models for learning wireless application concepts and design.
  • on-line help files, with a comprehensive Help Utility that guides developers through the design and implementation of wireless applications.
  • application exerciser, which generates realistic wireless network conditions enabling a developer to test applications through both normal and unusual circumstances.
  • support for PowerBuilder and Visual Basic, enabling developers to use these popular application development tools.

The KeyBuilder software is priced at $995. Racotek also offers application integration classes at its offices.
