Trio Offers Analog Data/Fax, GSM, and ISDN

Mobile users in the UK now have access to the first three-in-one communications card in a Type II PC Card format. The card, dubbed the Trio, includes a V.34 modem, 9600bps GSM capability, and ISDN support allowing users to send or receive data and faxes from virtually anywhere using whichever means is most convenient or cost effective.

In terms of data throughput, the card is capable of transmitting data at 33.6Kbps over analog phone lines, faxes at 14.4Kbps, ISDN at 2 x 64Kbps, and GSM at 9600bps. Users can switch between the various functions by simply swapping cables. The Trio plug and plays with all IBM ThinkPads and works over various digital cellular networks including GSM, PCN, and DCS. Handsets currently supported include those from Alcatel, AEG/Nortel/Matra, Nokia, Norte, Motorola, Panasonic, Siemens, and Sony. All that’s needed is the appropriate cable and software upgrade.

Performance increases when using the card in ISDN mode, offering an effective throughput of 128Kbps using channel bundling. The card is compliant with CAPI 2.0, Microsoft TAPI, and V.120, making it compatible with most existing applications. Additional drivers also make it plug and play compatible with Windows 95.
