Unit Features Flexible Mobile Mount

For applications that require a flexible mounting system together with a full-screen active-matrix color display, a new candidate recently arrived on the block. Ceder Rapids, Iowa-based Norand Corp. introduced the newest member of its PENKEY family of pen systems, the PENKEY 6500 Mobile Mount Computer, designed with a variety of mounting brackets suitable for use in environments ranging from forklifts, lift carts, and manufacturing stations.

The PENKEY 6500 builds on the product line’s existing architecture which includes a 486SLC2-50 processor running Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS. Measuring 12″ x 10.5″ x 2.5″ and weighing about 7 lbs., the unit is not designed for all-day carry-around use, but can become mobile as the need arises. The PENKEY 6500 has slots for two Type II PC Cards, or a single Type III card. When equipped with a 2.4 GHz wireless radio, the device can serve as a PC client within network applications. The 6500 also features two serial and one parallel port, along with support for either tethered laser bar code scanners or data collection keyboards.

Two display options are available for the PENKEY 6500: a 10.4-inch 640 x 480 electroluminescent screen, or a 640 x 480 active-matrix color screen. Due to its increased power consumption, the active matrix option is probably more suitable for higher-end decision support applications that benefit from more sophisticated data visualization. Designed for use in a typical work environment, the PENKEY 6500 is capable of withstanding rain, humidity, and a broad range of temperatures.
