PDA Developers – Volume 4.5 – Sept/Oct 1996

PDA Developers, originally PIE Developers, was the premier, independent printed resource for mobile developers in the mid-to-late 1990s. Billing itself as “A Technical Journal for PDA Developers,” each issue contained detailed articles, tutorials, and coding examples covering all major handheld platforms.

Published by San Francisco-based Creative Digital Systems, the journal was expertly managed and edited by Steve Mann (who also wrote a number of articles in each issue).

History

PDA Developers Volume 4.5, dated September/October 1996, billed itself as "A Technical Journal for PDA Developers" and sold for $13.95 in the United States and $14.95 in Canada.1 It was published by Creative Digital, Inc. of 293 Corbett Avenue, San Francisco, which reached readers through its cdpubs.com web site.2

The publication had begun under a different name and a narrower focus: its predecessor, PIE Developers, described itself as "A Technical Journal for Newton Developers" and sold for $8.95 in the United States, and its November 1993 issue (Volume 1.15) was a special reprint of earlier material prepared for the Newton Platform Development Conference held December 7-8, 1993.3 By the time the journal was retitled PDA Developers, its focus had widened from the Newton specifically to handheld computing generally.13 An April 1995 announcement identified the publisher as Creative Digital Systems,4 and by early 1996 the company was styled Creative Digital, Inc.5

Volume 4.5 covered several handheld platforms across its cover lineup: the Newton Internet Enabler (NIE), including an easy-to-use client prototype and an explanation of its API; a review of the HP OmniGo 100, along with a compression tool and an Express options application; a guide to Pilot conduits; and shorter pieces on Psion OPL localization and a review of Informed Filler.1

The back cover of this issue advertised PDA Developers North, a developer conference set for September 11-13, 1996 at the Inland Meeting and Exposition Center in Westmont, Illinois, near Chicago's O'Hare Airport.2 Its keynote speakers included Charles Davies of The Psion Group, Harel Kodesh of Microsoft's Consumer Appliance Group, Grover Right of Geoworks, Kheng Jo-Khaw of HP APCD, Janne Jormalainen of Nokia, Steve Schramm of General Magic, and Gary Gephardt of ARDIS, and its sponsors included Psion, General Magic, U.S. Robotics/Palm Computing, ARDIS, Apple Computer, and Hewlett-Packard.2 Registration cost $450 until September 8 and $500 afterward and included the PDA Solutions Exhibition on September 14, 1996.2 By March 1997 the company, by then named Creative Digital Publishing Inc., had renamed the event the Handheld Systems Conference; entering its third year, it was scheduled for April 24-26, 1997 at the San Francisco Airport Hilton.6
