History

The Rogue PenApps Workbook is a self-training guide written by Catherine Young and published by Young Ideas Software Design Services.1 The firm, based in Sausalito, California, holds the workbook's 1993 copyright.2 Its title page describes it as Self-Training for PenApps for PenPoint Using PenAppsDBMS and xBase, teaching developers to build applications for GO Corporation's PenPoint operating system using PenApps, the pen-application development tool from Slate Corporation.1

The workbook is organized into two self-training tracks.3 The first runs to eight exercises covering PenApps for PenPoint using the native PenAppsDBMS — from "Practice with the Tools" through objects and settings, debugging, programming the objects, showing and manipulating data, the Schema Tool, and a finished product.3 The second track adds a single ninth exercise, an xBase Tutorial, covering PenApps for PenPoint using the add-on xBase engine.3

The workbook presents itself as a companion to Slate's PenApps Developer's Guide and Reference Manual, which it tells readers are also required to program a PenApps application.4 It describes PenApps as a software-development tool that runs in an object-oriented environment and programs in the PenBasic language.4 For interface design, it directs developers to GO Corporation's PenPoint User Interface Design Reference.5

Young Ideas sold the workbook directly for $30.00 per copy, plus California sales tax and shipping, and shipped each order with a 3.5-inch floppy disk holding the exercises' database and TIFF images.2 Orders went to the firm's Sausalito office at 207 Second Street, with discounts offered on volume orders of ten or more.2
