Notwithstanding the delays that followed an overly optimistic schedule, the coming Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network should provide a new range of opportunities for wireless application developers.
However, users are skeptical, and anything less than fully robust applications are likely to create the same backlash that the pen computing industry is currently facing.
Wireless Connect, Inc. is offering a product known as Desktop CDPD that should help developers create applications in a controlled environment.
The software, which features a graphical user interface and online help system, requires a 486DX/33 MHz PC with 12 MB of memory. The software runs under UnixWare 1.1 or later, which is supplied with Desktop CDPD.
Desktop CDPD emulates the performance of a CDPD network and enables you to test your application under a variety of conditions including packet delay, packet drops, duplicate packets, out-of-order packets, and loss of signal.
Wireless Connect worked with a number of CDPD hardware manufacturers to ensure the accuracy of their emulation. This enables a developer to build and test an application before CDPD is actually deployed in their region, and without the cost associated with extensive live network testing.
Using Desktop CDPD, an application developer can simulate a number of network conditions, including load, along with estimating the cost a user would incur using the application. Desktop CDPD retails for $3995.
