Betting on the idea that companies are interested in improving their productivity through improved information access and management, Portland, Oregon-based Gaia Software has introduced new software and services that make it easier to distribute data stored on IBM AS/400 systems.

Gaia has done this by developing a wireless client that enables a handheld device, specifically Motorola’s Marco PDA, to send queries and receive database responses using a wireless connection to AS/400 systems running IBM RadioPac or PagerPac software. Gaia president and CEO, Craig Fisk, noted that many companies rely on IBM’s mid-range AS/400 systems to provide the bulk of their information processing needs. To Fisk, integrating this information repository with the Marco is a natural solution to a common problem.

As you’ll recall, Motorola’s Marco tightly integrates Apple’s Newton PDA architecture with wide-area wireless networking through the ARDIS nationwide service. Gaia is offering a complete outsourcing solution for businesses that need to implement such a system for order placement, account queries, service reports, and other common field tasks.

The custom enterprise applications are created using the Gaia Forms technology, together with its innovative Personal Media software environment that enables users to set up notes and workspaces for organizing information.

On the AS/400, companies will require IBM’s Mobile Network Access RadioPac and PagerPac software, enabling the OS/400 software to support the asynchronous communication over a leased line between the AS/400 and the wireless data network.
