Apple Successfully Petitions for Data-PCS

Even though Apple’s interest in wireless solutions for Newton-compatible PDAs seems new-found, the company, in fact, has long recognized the value of wireless computing. This was most notably demonstrated when, in January, 1991, Apple filed a Petition for Rulemaking with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a block of radio frequencies for low-power, wireless data communication.

The petition for the new service, dubbed “Data-PCS,” was endorsed by education and industry alike. Data-PCS is intended to provide new ways for communicating information while educating, conducting business, or providing medical care.

In mid-February, Apple’s efforts paid off when the FCC Commissioners voted unanimously to allocate 10 MHz of radio spectrum for Data-PCS. The new frequency block, located at 2390 to 2400 MHz, is currently used by ham radio operators which Apple claims is compatible with the intended use of Data-PCS.

Because of this, manufacturers can start producing radio modems using the new frequencies immediately without further procedural or administrative delays from the FCC. This is quite fortunate because in many cases, new frequencies have existing users that require relocation, a costly and time-consuming process.

Apple foresees a number of useful applications for Data-PCS, especially for people including students and educators that require low-cost, wireless data connections to services such as the Internet, without costly installation or airtime charges. In addition, the allocation of 10 MHz enables a range of sophisticated applications that require higher bandwidth and data transfer rates than current systems such as wireless electronic mail.
