Providing access to data within a single facility has obvious utility, however, it can quickly become limiting when critical data must be accessible throughout two or more buildings in a corporate or educational campus. Mountain View, California-based Proxim is targeting just such a problem with its new RangeLINK family of inter-building remote bridges.
RangeLINK serves as a bridge that can link together Ethernet LANs located in buildings up to three miles apart. Using frequency hopping spread spectrum RF technology and operating in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, RangeLINK is capable of providing a transmission speed of 1.6 Mbps.
While this speed is considerably less than a dedicated line, it compares favorably with several wide area leased line options. More significantly however, it eliminates the need for placing costly underground cables or paying for ongoing communications charges. By employing spread spectrum technology, communications between buildings are highly reliable and secure.
RangeLINK models come equipped with everything needed to get inter-building communication up and running, including an Ethernet interface, remote bridging software, and a directional antenna with a long cable enabling the antenna to be positioned conveniently. The RangeLINK is available with two antenna options depending on the distances between the buildings: a semi-directional “patch” antenna, and a higher gain directional “yagi” antenna.
The RangeLINK product line is available immediately, with prices starting at $2,975 and increasing depending on the speed, range capabilities, and options.
