Industrial-strength mobile computers require that all its components be able to withstand the rigors of heavy-duty use. This includes the casing, screen, electronic components and, of course, the data storage system. Rotating magnetic media, while improving in shock capacity, still comes second to solid state storage options.
Understanding this, Husky Computers Ltd., makers of ruggedized pen computers, has teamed up with SunDisk Corp., the leading manufacturer of equally rugged flash disk storage cards to offer a complete computing and storage solution. Specifically, Husky has elected to sell the SunDisk PC Cards with its recently introduced FC-486. By employing a fully sealed magnesium alloy case, the 4.4 lbs. (2 kg) Husky FC-486 is capable of withstanding a six foot (1.8 m) drop on a hard surface.
The FC-486 also features slots for up to four completely sealed Type II PC Cards enabling rugged data storage expansion. This guards the FC-486 against such environmental hazards as accidental immersion, sand, dust, vibration, and altitude. Employing PC Cards also reduces the weight of the device, an important consideration for all day operation.
Husky will offer a range of SunDisk cards varying in uncompressed capacity from 10 to 40 MB. The SunDisk cards are fully interoperable with Husky’s pen computers, offering true plug-and-play installation and use.
Husky Computers are designed and built at the company’s headquarters in Coventry, England, and conform to the quality procedure standards of ISO 9001/BS 5750.
