Omnidata International Updates RDT 3200

Signature capture is a natural use of pen computing systems, but devices intended for field use require special consideration for ruggedness, especially since the device is likely to be passed around and handled by many different people. Bumps, drops, and the occasional toss is the order of the day for these go-anywhere devices.

Utah-based Omnidata International recently unveiled that it has added this capability to its model RDT 3200 rugged DOS computer. Using the new system, workers can now gather signatures in harsher-than-normal environments without undue concern over the handling of the unit.

As a specialized unit, the RDT 3200 seems well-suited for the task. The device has an active area of 4.8 x 1-inches on which signatures are digitized at a horizontal and vertical resolution of 410 lines per inch, sampling at 377 points per second. Omnidata claims that the pen has a lifetime of 250,000 signatures, which translates to about 10 years at 125 signatures a day.

The RDT 3200 features a NEMA 4-level sealed enclosure with the signature capture hardware completely integrated allowing the seal to be maintained. The device includes a full screen display, a QWERTY keyboard, serial and parallel ports, and two PC Card slots.

Omnidata also offers a range of wireless options for the RDT 3200, including wide area systems utilitizing RAM Mobile Data, ARDIS, CDPD, and GPS, along with Proxim’s 2.4GHz local area network solution.
