History

This user's manual documents the Macintosh Operating System edition of Apple Computer's Newton Connection Utilities.1 Apple introduced the software lineage behind the utilities in June 1993, when it announced the Newton Connection Kit, which enabled the transfer, synchronization, backup, and updating of information between a Newton device and a PC or Macintosh personal computer.2

In March 1994, Apple shipped Newton Connection v2.0 for Macintosh, which let users exchange and share MessagePad information — notes, letters, name-cards, to-do lists, appointments, and data created in many third-party applications — with common desktop personal-information-management, word-processing, spreadsheet, and database programs running on the Macintosh.3 Apple priced Newton Connection v2.0 for Macintosh at $99.3

With the Newton 2.0 platform, announced on November 13, 1995, Apple consolidated this desktop-connection capability into the Newton Connection Utilities.4 The utilities offered the same backup, restore, and installation features as Apple's Newton Backup Utility, and added the ability to synchronize PC files with corresponding data on a Newton PDA, import and export text files, perform those tasks remotely by modem, and enter data into a Newton PDA directly from a personal computer's keyboard.4 Apple scheduled the utilities for release in the first quarter of 1996 for both Windows and Mac OS personal computers, at a price of $69.4

On October 28, 1996, Apple unveiled the MessagePad 2000, the first product from its Information Appliance Division, running the Newton 2.1 operating system.5 This Macintosh edition of the user's manual was published by Apple Computer, Inc., of 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, and carries the part number 030-7273-A.1
