History
Avail Technology, Inc. developed TapWorks, which it billed as the first integrated application for the Apple Newton MessagePad - a single package combining text processing, spreadsheets, drawings, and graphs.1 The software could be downloaded and installed from either a Macintosh or a PC running Windows.1
By the summer of 1994, TapWorks was being published and distributed by Apple Computer's StarCore group, part of the company's Personal Interactive Electronics Division, which carried it within a Newton software library of almost forty-five titles supplied on PCMCIA cards and floppy diskettes.2 TapWorks remained a trademark of Avail Technology, Inc.2
To promote both the MessagePad and the software, Apple offered a free copy of TapWorks - a $119 value based on its suggested retail price as of June 24, 1994 - to anyone who purchased a Newton MessagePad between July 1, 1994 and September 30, 1994.1 Redeeming the offer required mailing in the coupon together with the MessagePad's serial number and the original or a photocopy of the sales receipt, addressed to N.B. National Mailing in care of the Newton and TapWorks Promotions in San Jose, California.1
The promotion ran from July 1 to September 30, 1994, was valid only within the fifty United States and the District of Columbia, and required that properly completed coupons be received by October 31, 1994.1 Apple Computer, Inc., which held the copyright on the coupon, asked buyers to allow six to ten weeks for delivery.1
