Multimedia PCMCIA Smorgasbord from New Media

As multimedia enters the mainstream, more and more professionals are finding that applications and presentations created on the desktop are becoming indispensible on the road. One choice, of course, is to replace your mobile system with an expensive new multimedia laptop. The other is to convert your existing laptop into a portable multimedia workstation.

If the later makes more sense, two new PCMCIA-based systems from veteran New Media Corp. is worth investigating. The first, dubbed CD Sound Studio, is a complete portable multimedia system incorporating everything you need in a single package.

Previewed at COMDEX, the package includes a double-speed CD-ROM drive, 16-bit stereo sound card, built-in microphone, dual stereo speakers, and an integrated sound system from Altec Lansing. The CD Sound Studio is a Type II PCMCIA system that takes advantage of New Media’s plug-and-play device drivers for maximum flexibility.

The CD Sound Studio samples at 44.1 KHz and supports .WAV, .SND, MIDI, .AVI, .VOC, and .RMI files in play mode. It will be available in the first quarter of 1995 at a suggested price of $799.

The second solution from New Media features a very innovative multifunction PCMCIA Type II card combining a 16-bit sound board with a SCSI adapter—both essential to creating a mobile multimedia system.

Dubbed the Multimedia Combo, the company claims to support full-rate simultaneous data transfer through the SCSI bus and audio channels without degradation in either. The Multimedia Combo is available immediately and has a suggested price of $499.
