While much attention has been devoted to the almost mythical “road warrior” who travels across the continent as frequently as most people travel to the supermarket, the simple truth is that much of the advantages of mobile computing can be realized by the millions of workers who roam no further than their colleagues’ office.

These individuals, perhaps suitably named the “office warriors,” require access to their desktop and server-based information to coordinate and conduct their very real battles within the confines of the company campus.

Jumping on this opportunity to provide wireless and seamless campus-wide communication is Solectek Corp. with its AIRLAN CAN (Campus Area Network). Employing the newly announced AIRLAN/Access and AIRLAN/Bridge Plus, together with its existing line of wireless adapters, Solectek permits users to roam a wireless network that can extend up to 25 square miles (approx. 65 square km).

The AIRLAN/Access creates a wireless access point that connects a roaming mobile device to the wired network. Each access point covers approximately 50,000 square feet (4645 square meters) and hands communication with the mobile device to the next “cell” when it leaves its range.

The AIRLAN/Bridge Plus, on the other hand, enables networks to be linked together in buildings that are literally miles apart.

With a company-owned CAN, users can utilize full-bandwidth, untethered communication without incurring monthly usage charges typical with a wireless Metropolitan Area Network. In addition, linking buildings using wireless removes the need for costly underground cabling work.
