With the stated goals of establishing a foundation for long-term growth, and enabling service providers to more quickly complete deployment and achieve interoperability, the CDPD Forum announced the publication of Release 1.1 of the CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) System Specification along with Implementor Guidelines.

The CDPD Forum is an industry association made up of 87 member companies, ranging from network hardware manufacturers, systems integrators and resellers, to cellular service providers. Using these new specifications, hardware and software vendors, together with service providers, can create products that are fully interoperable while leveraging certain existing LAN and WAN systems.

Among the new features present in Release 1.1 are the following:

  • Optional V.42bis data compression, enabling data transfers up to three times existing rates.
  • CDPD and IP multicast services, enabling a single message to be sent to multiple recipients simultaneously.
  • Improved accounting, billing, and summary information exchange.
  • Enhanced Radio Resource Management, enabling the best radio channel to be selected for better performance.

The CDPD Forum claims to have service in 19 of the top 50 Metropolitan Standard Areas (MSA) in the U.S., with 22 additional cities to be deployed in 1995.

Release 1.1 of the specification is available on CD-ROM for $75 to forum members, and $125 for non-members. You can receive a fax-back order form by calling the CDPD Forum.
