PIE Developers – Volume 2.3 – May, 1994

PIE Developers, later PDA Developers, was the premier, independent printed resource for PDA developers in the mid-to-late 1990s. Originally billing itself as “A Technical Journal for Newton Developers,” early issues contained detailed articles, tutorials, and coding examples focusing on the Apple Newton MessagePad platform.

Published by San Francisco-based Creative Digital Systems, the journal was expertly managed and edited by Steve Mann (who also wrote a number of articles in each issue).

History

PIE Developers Volume 2.3, dated May 1994, was an issue of the Apple Newton developer journal PIE Developers, which described itself on its cover as "A Technical Journal for Newton Developers" and sold for $8.95 in the United States and $9.95 in Canada.1 The issue's feature articles covered infrared programming on the Newton — recording and analyzing infrared signals, using the Newton as a remote control, and infrared chat software — together with the 1.0 release of the Newton Toolkit (NTK), PCMCIA and ProtoExpandos, and pieces on BookMaking, Beast III, and benchmarks.1

The journal was published by Creative Digital Systems of 293 Corbett Avenue, San Francisco, California, which listed contact by telephone and fax and through the America Online, AppleLink, NETCOM, and CompuServe online services.1 Creative Digital Systems sold Newton development tools directly to the journal's readers, offering PIE Developers subscribers a reduced price on its ViewFrame debugging software.1

PIE Developers had been published since 1993; its Volume 1.15 number, dated November 1993, was a special reprint distributed at the Newton Platform Development Conference held that December, and like the May 1994 issue it presented itself as a technical journal for Newton developers.2 The magazine appeared on a bimonthly schedule through this period, the May 1994 issue falling between the March and July 1994 numbers, each carrying the same $8.95 United States cover price.34

A few months later the magazine was renamed: beginning with Volume 2.6, dated November/December 1994, it became PDA Developers — identified on its cover as "formerly PIE Developers" — and broadened its coverage beyond the Newton to handheld platforms such as Psion and GEOS, while its cover price rose to $10.95 in the United States.5 The PDA Developers title continued into the following year, with Volume 3.1 (January/February 1995) maintaining the multi-platform coverage at the higher price.6

The company behind the journal, by then operating as Creative Digital Publishing Inc., later extended the line into a live event, the Handheld Systems Conference — described as "formerly PDA Developers" — which by its third year, in 1997, was held at the San Francisco Airport Hilton with Steve Mann as the company's contact.7
