Gaia Offers Personal Media for Newtons

To its credit, Apple’s Newton comes with a reasonable complement of built-in applications including a names file, an appointment scheduler, and a notebook, among other applications. However, most of these programs are quite rudimentary and have few features that really help you organize your data.

Recognizing an opportunity, Gaia Software has announced a new application for Newton PDAs dubbed Personal Media. Gaia designed the program to serve as a more integrated environment for capturing, organizing, and communicating information.

Personal Media uses the concept of a workspace through which people create and organize their information. People can create multiple workspaces and arrange them as needed on the screen. Doing this enables information to take on a context when related to other information on screen.

Unlike desktop environments, that also rely on multiple windows or views, Personal Media enables people to manipulate objects and information directly on screen without going through cumbersome menus. Even sending messages and notes involve simple drag and drop operations.

Within a workspace, people can create notepads for handwritten notes or typed text. The notepads feature numbered pages that can be turned, torn-out, filed, or communicated to other devices using email, fax, or infrared beaming.

Personal Media is available on disk, or on a 1MB SRAM PCMCIA card. The suggested price is $189 and $249 respectively, but is available directly from Gaia for $99 and $149 until December 31, 1994.
