History

CalliGrapher 5.0 for Windows CE was released on December 3, 1997 by Silicon Graphics, Inc. and its pen-and-Internet technology unit ParaGraph PI Technology, at a suggested retail price of $49.95.1 The software provided handwriting recognition and spell checking for any application built for the Windows CE operating system, letting users write directly on the screen of their handheld personal computer instead of typing.1 The disk's label carries the tagline Write Naturally and identifies the program as a "Handwriting Recognition System" for the Windows CE operating system.2

Version 5.0 added a Screen Draw Mode, the ability to write in any orientation, and deferred recognition.1 CalliGrapher was a "universal" recognizer built on fuzzy logic and neural network techniques; it understood natural cursive, print, and mixed cursive-and-print handwriting, recognized both dictionary and non-dictionary words and arbitrary symbol sequences, and required no user training.1 It supported American English with an expandable language architecture, ran on Windows CE versions 1.0 and 2.0, and was compatible with SH3 and MIPS processors.1

At COMDEX '97, CalliGrapher 5.0 won two industry honors: Byte Magazine's "Best of Show – Winner" award, and selection as a finalist for PC Week's "Best of COMDEX" award.1

The release followed CalliGrapher 4.3 for Windows CE, which ParaGraph International, Inc. had announced on April 23, 1997 at the same $49.95 price; that version offered an integrated spell checker, average word-recognition accuracy of roughly 90 to 95 percent, and ran on Windows CE v1.0.3 CalliGrapher 4.3 was among the first titles offered through MobileSoft's electronic software distribution channel, announced May 12, 1997.4

ParaGraph's recognition technology had originally been implemented in Apple's Newton operating system, under an exclusive Apple license that became non-exclusive on June 30, 1995.5 ParaGraph International, Inc. was acquired by Silicon Graphics in 1997, becoming ParaGraph PI Technology, headed by Silicon Graphics vice president Dr. Stepan Pachikov.1 In March 1998, ParaGraph PI partnered with Digital River, Inc. to handle online sales of CalliGrapher 5.0 through ParaGraph's Web site.6

CalliGrapher 5.1 followed in April 1998, adding color-ink support, pop-up punctuation entry, and finer screen-orientation control, and extending compatibility to the Palm PC platform alongside the Handheld PC.7 That May, NEC's MobilePro 750C became the first Windows CE device to ship with CalliGrapher built into ROM.8
